Biking

There’s something almost meditative about the rhythm of pedaling through alpine and high desert terrain—the way your breath syncs with the cadence, how the world slows down just enough to notice the way shadows pool in sandstone crevices.

On two wheels, you become part of the landscape.

Glide beneath canyon walls that rise like ancient cathedrals in Zion National Park. Feel the sun as you navigate Snow Canyon State Park’s black lava fields and blushing sandstone. Breathe the earthy scent of sage after a rare rainstorm in the desert.

This is not a workout. It’s not transportation. This is cycling in Greater Zion –  a landscape that demands to be felt, not just seen.

Choose Your Two-Wheel Path

Whether you’re seeking the hum of an electric-bike cruise through valley roads, the heart-pounding triumph of conquering climbs that challenge even elite cyclists, or simply the pure freedom of rolling through desert vistas that stretch toward forever — Greater Zion meets you where you are. The hardest part is choosing where to start.

Here are a few ideas:

NOTE: If you like to remain on bike paths only, be sure to verify the complete route for portions that might take you on city roads. Not every path is linked and may result in a mile or two of a road ride.

Kolob Reservoir

47.4 mi |  Out & Back

This is a rollercoaster of a route that will see you dropping elevation at blinding speeds. Kolob Reservoir resides in a high mountain meadow surrounded by pine and quaking aspen trees. Be prepared for a lot of tight turns on a steep grade with red and grey rock monoliths towering above you as you make this thrilling descent.

Red Hills Parkway

8.3 mi | Connector

Coast along the top of the cliffs surrounding the northern section of St. George on this mostly paved trail route. There’s no better way to see the city and get introduced to the red rock formations that make up a good portion of Greater Zion.

Sand Hollow

21.9 mi | Counter Clockwise Loop

Sand Hollow Reservoir is a jewel in the desert, defying logic as the beautiful emerald waters sit among rocky bluffs and rolling dunes. The higher portions of this route offer sweeping views that stretch for miles. The loop is relatively flat, with some gentle rises mixed in.

Snow Canyon State Park

4.5 mi | One Way (part of 18-mile loop)

Snow Canyon is an incredible and challenging ride through a red and white streaked sandstone canyon. Pedal past petrified dunes and rivers of black lava rock for a route that’s as stunning as it is memorable.

Veyo Loop

43.5 mi | Clockwise Loop

Veyo Loop is a prehistoric loop among inactive cinder cones. Only a few moderate climbs make this an ideal long-distance ride for someone not looking to work too hard but still have fun. Along the way, you will see alpine mountains, lakes, canyons, and lava rock.

Zion Canyon Scenic Route

42.5 mi | Out & Back

The crown jewel of Greater Zion, biking up to the main canyon of Zion National Park, is a phenomenal experience that can’t be beat. For most of the year, only shuttles are allowed to drive in the main canyon, so you don’t have to compete with much traffic as you enjoy the beauty of Zion National Park.

Alternate short route: Pa’rus Trail before the Zion Canyon Scenic Route

6.4 mi | Out & Back

The Pa’rus Trail, meaning “bubbling water,” follows the Virgin River along the valley floor of Zion Canyon. This paved route passes smooth stones, shady cottonwood trees, and soaring cliffs, offering opportunities to spot wildlife like deer, wild turkeys, and songbirds along the way. It’s a peaceful, scenic ride for cyclists of all levels. For more information, read about bicycling in Zion National Park
