Early Morning Adventure

Hike the Canyon Overlook Trail

America the Beautiful Pass or Day Pass

Start your day with the Canyon Overlook Trail, a short but stunning 1-mile round-trip hike. Access the trail via private vehicle through the historic Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel is an engineering marvel carved into the cliffs. Note that large-vehicle restrictions begin on June 7, 2026, so plan accordingly if driving a bus, RV, or oversized vehicle. Once on the trail, enjoy sweeping views down into the mouth of Zion Canyon and across to the towering peaks — a truly photo-worthy start to the day.

Hike Emerald Pools Trail

Head deeper into the canyon for the Emerald Pools Trail. Feel the refreshing mist of waterfalls as you walk beneath the Middle Pool. Families and casual explorers can stick to the Lower Pool, which is wheelchair and stroller-friendly. Solo hikers or active groups can continue to the Upper Pool for panoramic canyon vistas framed by the park’s towering cliffs.

Explore Kolob Terrace

Kolob Terrace Road is a 22-mile scenic byway departing from the town of Virgin that most visitors to Greater Zion never find — which means more trail for you. Hikers can choose from options ranging from the family-friendly Northgate Peaks Trail to the permit-required Subway slot canyon, while climbers head to Lamb's Knoll for quality sandstone without the Springdale crowds. The road continues north to Kolob Reservoir, a high-elevation alpine lake worth the drive for the scenery alone.
