Thursday, August 31 – Lecture at NOON in the Courtroom of the Pioneer Courthouse. Bring your lunch to enjoy stories of Zion Canyon, the presentation will look at what Zion National Park has meant to Indigenous people, early Latter-day Saint settlers, tourism boosters, and more recent park visitors. He’ll debunk myths about what the Paiutes thought about the canyon, explore the name change from Mukuntuweap to Zion, recount David Flanigan’s construction of the cable works, tell the death-defying tale of the first attempt to scale the Great White Throne, and talk about the visit by world-famous composer Olivier Messiaen, which led to the orchestral work, From the Canyon to the Stars.
