Medicine in Old Silver Reef-A Tale of Four Cultures

The many ethnic backgrounds and belief systems of the residents of Old Silver Reef resulted in a range of medical practices. The goal was the same, healing the sick and injured, but the ways of achieving this differed for the Southern Paiutes, Mormon pioneers, Euro-American miners/merchants, and Chinese. Join Dr. Judy Henck in an exploration of these different medical cultures, including stories of the medical methods and beliefs, the healers, and the diseases, accidents, and sometimes mayhem that befell the residents of this cosmopolitan, yet Wild West town.

Dr. Judy Henck, a resident of New Silver Reef for the last 4 years, is a toxicologist by profession, as well as a
gardener and incurable history buff.
She holds a PhD in Pharmacology from Michigan State University and has spent her career in the safety evaluation of pharmaceuticals and other chemicals.
Dr. Henck served as an adjunct faculty member at the
University of Michigan and the Marian University School of Osteopathic Medicine, and has published and lectured widely in the fields of toxicology and safety assessment. As a Master Gardener in the Midwest, she was an invited lecturer on medicinal and poisonous plants.
