beaver dam mountains

The class will traverse the Beaver Dam Mountains, a tilted block of the earth’s crust at the western edge of the Colorado Plateau, in a zone of tortured rock variously called “the transition zone” between the Colorado Plateau structural province and the Basin and Range structural province. In passing westward through the range we traverse rocks ranging in age from 2 million to 1.7 billion years in age, and encounter evidence of multiple episodes of mountain building. Erosion of canyons in the range has exposed folds, faults, and giant landslides. Stops will include short hikes and fossil hunts in rocks of various ages. Limited to 12 participants.

MINIMUM ENROLLMENT: 3 by Tuesday, Nov 3, 2020, @ 12 noon or class will cancel. If you’re reading this past the minimum enrollment date it means the class is a go and you can still sign up by calling 435 772 3264.

ACTIVITY LEVEL RATING: EASY Flat walking of up to 4 miles. Combined short walks or one continuous hike.
