Dixie Days Trek 4

September 11 - 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Dixie Days Trek

The Escalante Oil Well Site #2 is a significant piece of St. George’s industrial and environmental history. This location represents the early attempts to tap into the region’s natural resources, reflecting the ambition and optimism of the community in pursuing economic development through oil exploration. On the night of March 6, 1935, approximately 70-100 onlookers gathered to witness the first oil. Tragically, however, the wildcat oil well exploded and caused the greatest disaster of human lives lost in Washington County. This tragic event underscores the risks and challenges of such endeavors our ancestors faced.
