Antone Prince, an Unusual Sheriff

September 23, 2023 - 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Sheriff Antone Prince

Enjoy  a presentation about one of Washington County’s most well-known public servants at the Silver Reef Museum.

Saturday, September 23 at 10:00 a.m.

Few people today have the slightest idea of who the sheriff of Washington County is, or are even able to recognize his name. Yet in the mid twentieth century, Antone Prince became one of the “most notable and well-known men to the populace of southern Utah”. Appointed sheriff without even having applied for the job, he began his career by solving a cold case that brought state-wide attention. Serving much of the time with no or only one deputy, he faced-off with hardened and armed criminals, juvenile pranksters, the FBI’s number one wanted, and cattle rustlers. His part in the 1953 raid on Short Creek brought world-wide attention. Admired for his fair treatment of those to whom he enforced the law, his courage and bravery in facing down the bad guys, and his uncanny skill in tracking them down, Antone achieved almost folk-hero status in Southern Utah.
